AI Product Development: Expectations, Directives, Accountability, Constraints

By now, you've probably seen Tobi's (Shopify CEO) memo around AI. It creates 4 things from teams I see doing this well: Expectations, Directives, Accountability, Constraints.

1. Firmly Sets Expectations "Understanding AI is now a fundamental expectation of everyone at Shopify" and "Everyone means everyone."

2. States Directives "AI prototyping must be part of their project phases. "

3. Creates Accountability Mechanisms "We will add AI usage questions to performance reviews."

4. Creates Constraints

To Force New Behaviors "Before asking for more headcount and resources, you must first prove you can't get it done with AI."

The reality is changing human behavior is HARD. All four of these things need to be present if you want to create change:

1. Expectations

2. Directives

3. Accountability

4. Constraints
